Trying to decide when to visit? Mother Nature seems to have hit the shuffle button on the weather playlist, treating locals to a delightful medley of surprises. One day, the sun plays peek-a-boo behind fluffy cumulus clouds, while a gentle breeze waltzes through fields of wildflowers, carrying whispers of spring. But just when you’ve unpacked your sunglasses and picnic blanket, Indiana unleashes its mischievous side, unleashing a symphony of raindrops. Indiana’s Ohio River Scenic Byway winds through our county along Highway 66.  Here you can find historic towns and natural beauty to unique shopping and dining, there is so much to see and do on this scenic byway.

Additionally, the county is served by the Hoosier Southern Railroad, facilitating freight transportation and industrial connectivity.

Perry County’s access to the Ohio River further enhances its transportation options, enabling commerce and trade through waterborne routes. This multi-modal transportation infrastructure contributes to the county’s economic vitality and connectivity within the broader region.

7. Flooding Risks

Dams on large rivers help maintain a consistent depth of water, which not only helps control water during flood events, but also aids in navigation. Dams have one level of water above the dam and a different level below. The locks are man-made structure that run alongside a dam that allows for the water level to be controlled — so that recreational and commercial boat traffic can safely passage from one side of the dam to the other.

River flooding occurs when river levels rise and overflow their banks or the edges of their main channel and  inundate areas that are normally dry. River flooding can be caused by heavy  rainfall, dam failures, rapid snowmelt and ice jams. Certain areas of the county along Highway 66 do flood yearly during the Spring and Fall months.
